NSCC Libraries Say Good Bye to VHS Videocassettes

The VHS videotape format first introduced to consumers in 1975 by JVC/Matsushita will be seeing its final demise this semester at the NSCC Libraries, as the Lynn and Danvers Campus Libraries withdraw the videocassettes from their circulating collections. The Library has not purchased VHS titles in years - in fact, the format has not been released in the U.S. since 2008.

The Library will not be losing any of its valuable content on VHS. Heavily used VHS tapes will be replaced with either their DVD or streaming video counterpart. Faculty using Library VHS tapes in their courses should contact either Bill Meunier in Danvers or Carolyn Johnson in Lynn to ensure there is no disruption to classes in which they have planned viewings using VHS videos. Faculty should also contact their Library Liaison if they are interested in working with library staff to purchase new videos for classroom subjects.

Say Hello (if you haven’t already) to Streaming Videos
Since 2010 the NSCC Libraries have subscribed to a streaming video database called Films on Demand. This database contains educational films, documentaries and news programs in all academic subject areas from well known producers like Cambridge Educational, Films for the Humanities & Sciences, PBS, Nova and Ken Burns. This “faculty favorite” database has received nearly 124,000 hits since the beginning of the Fall 2011 semester.

By creating an account within the database faculty may set up a favorites folder for easy storage and access to videos they may use in the classroom. The database also allows faculty the ability to create customized playlists for courses. Faculty may make appointments with librarians at both the Lynn and Danvers Campus Libraries for information about searching and using some of the advanced features available when using videos from the Films on Demand database for classroom viewing.

Libraries to Host Book Discussion to Celebrate Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month, the Danvers and Lynn campus libraries are pleased to host a lively book discussion of W.E.B. DuBois' classic work The Souls of Black Folk. This special event will be held simultaneously at both campus libraries on February 29th from 1pm - 2pm. Multiple copies of The Souls of Black Folk are available for loan at the libraries. An online book discussion guide has been created by NSCC Librarians to facilitate research and discussion. Light refreshments with be served during the event. Hope to see you there! Bloom's Literary Criticism - 535 literary criticism eBooks now available

Search thousands of critical articles published by noted scholars under the Bloom's Literary Criticism series; includes "Bloom's How to Write About:"with specific advice on how to write good essays on popularly assigned authors." Legal Pages supplement to Massachusetts Lawyers Diary and Manual now available online

The Legal Pages, an annual supplement to the Massachusetts Lawyers Diary and Manual, is now available online. The "Legal Pages" contains a directory of the top legal administrators for all fifty states. In addition, there are brief biographies of all of the judges adjudicating in Massachusetts courts. There are also directions and maps to all of the courts in the state.

Jim Chisholm Exhibits Paintings in Lynn Campus Library

NSCC’s own Jim Chisholm, art teacher extraordinaire, isexhibiting a series of his current paintings in the Lynn Campus Library. Thepaintings are of local landscapes, including sites in Ipswich and Boxford. Mostof the exhibited works are in watercolor.

Jim has taught at NSCC since 1995, and is a graduate of theMassachusetts College of Art and of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts inBoston. He has exhibited at galleries in the area, including the Gallery DellaPiana in Wenham, and the Bravos Arts Gallery in Gloucester. He has won awards from exhibitions at theSchool of the Museum of Fine Arts and at the Marblehead and Rockport ArtAssociations.

October is Information Literacy Month!

Information is currently available from an overwhelming number of sources and in a huge number of formats, including printed text, television, videos, library databases, and websites. Students will need to be able to choose the best source for what they need to know, as well as whether they need a thorough analysis of a subject, a concise description, statistics, up‐to‐the‐minute data, etc.. These skills are necessary for everyone.

The NSCC Library has a great Information Literacy Tutorial that teaches how to navigate our information rich society and use that information effectively and ethically. This self-paced tutorial consists of 9 sections taking you from understanding your information need to citing your sources.

Another great information literacy resource is our LSC101 course. This 1 credit class takes you through the research process over 10 weeks. Offered during the Fall and Spring semesters, LSC101 examines how to find, choose and use a variety of resources. This course is essential for every student’s academic success. Kindle Ebooks Are Now Available to Borrow for Free from NSCC Library

The Library's Overdrive database contains a large collection of downloadable ebooks for a variety of portable devices. The lengthy list of compatible devices, however, heretofore did not include one of the U.S.' s most popular ebook readers - Amazon's Kindle. That all changed this week as Overdrive and Amazon partnered together to allow free ebook lending for Kindle devices through U.S. libraries that subscribe to the Overdrive database.

Kindle books are available for almost every title the NSCC Library owns in Overdrive’s collection of popular fiction and nonfiction titles at overdrive.noblenet.org. Using the advanced search feature though, will allow you to limit the format to just Kindle Books for viewing. Want one today? Check the box in the advanced search screen that says “only show titles with copies available”.

NSCC Library Continues to Expand Its Electronic Journal Collection

The Library’s collection of electronic journals continues to grow, following the trend we are seeing in all information formats: the shift from the print to online environment. The NSCC Library has recently acquired six new journal titles in the Medical, Nutrition, and Developmental Disabilities areas. Rather than accessing these journals through the Library’s research databases, access is given to the NSCC community through the Library’s NOBLE catalog. Following the access links in the Catalog brings you to the individual journal’s website, where you can search through the current issue or archives of the publication.

Finding Textbooks in the Library

The NSCC Libraries have some course textbooks on Reserve. We do not purchase textbooks, but do receive some from instructors for students to use in the Library. You can search the NOBLE catalog by course title or instructor here. We recommend that you stop by the Library to see if we have a textbook as well. Not all books will show up in the NOBLE catalog.
Keep in mind: these are Reserve books, and DO NOT leave the Library. Also, you MUST have your student ID to use them. When asking in the Library, please be sure to have the title of your textbook. If we don't have your textbook, ask your instructor to put one on Reserve.

NSCC Libraries Participate in Massachusetts Library Snapshot Day

On Wednesday April 13th the NSCC Libraries participated in Massachusetts Library Snapshot Day, a statewide effort to show what happens in a single day in the life of a library. NSCC Library staff kept statistics and took photos to document a day in the life of our Libraries.

Some interesting statistics for the day:
913 people visited our Libraries; 361 (mostly) students used our computers; we assisted 140 users with their projects, locating resources in the Libraries, and using the Libraries' computers; we taught two library instruction classes, hosted one event, and held one meeting in our Libraries.

Celebrating the Earth

Aprill 22 is Earth Day! Celebrated since 1970, this is a day of reflection and action to protect our planet. Events and activities are planned to highlight ways we can save our resources. Again, this year NSCC is having a Lynn Woods Cleanup day on Saturday, April 30th at 8am. Join together with the NSCC community to protect our local environment.
Many events will be happening in and around Boston. This is a great time to take action, and make a difference. Stop by the Library and check out our great collection of eco-friendly, sustainable, green-living books. Learn about our precious planet, and how we can take care of it.

April is National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month - a time for the poet in everyone to express his/her voice in original poems or just to enjoy the poetry of others - known and unknown. Poet Ranier Maria Rilke expressed poetry like this:

"For poems are not, as people think, simple emotions - they are experiences. For the sake of a single poem, you must see many cities, many people, and things. You must understands animals, must feel how birds fly, and know the gesture which small flowers make when they open in the morning. You must be able to think back to streets in unknown neighborhoods, to unexpected encounters, and to partings you had long seen coming, to days of childhood whose mystery is still unexplained...to mornings by the sea, to the sea itself, to nights of travel that rushed along high overhead and went flying with all the stars. And it is still not enough- you must have memories of many nights of love, each one different from all the others only then can it happen that in some very rare hour, the first word of a poem arises and goes forth".

Autism Resources at the NSCC Library

April is Autism Awareness month, and the NSCC Library has many resources to help you learn more about this disorder. Through our Ebrary database, we have access to over 100 books on autism and autism spectrum disorders. Ebrary is a great e-book database containing over 20,000 online e-books. This database is easy to search and provides the complete text of all the books in its database. Once in the database you can easily narrow your search by using the vendor-provided subject terms. Click on the title of the book to open it. Search within the book, or jump to specific chapter or pages with the click of your mouse. Log-in with the barode number from your activated NSCC student ID, and you can take notes, save books and organize your research easily.

Ebrary has book on many issues involving autism. You’ll find books covering various treatment and education options, family life and support, and personal accounts.

At the Lynn Campus Library you’ll find several children’s books that discuss issues related to autism, and personal stories documenting successes and struggles of families experiencing autism.

Ever wondered where to find information about copyright issues? An understanding of the basic parts of the copyright law is important to students, faculty and staff. Knowing the essentials can prevent unintentional breaches of the rights of others.

Copyright law was enacted to protect the rights of persons to their original creations. According to the Columbia Encyclopedia, copyright is the “Right granted by statute to the author or originator of certain literary, artistic, and musical productions whereby for a limited period of time he or she controls the use of the product. The work may be reproduced by the individual or by another licensed to do so by the individual. Royalties are paid on each performance of the work or each copy that is sold.” According to the Capstone Encyclopedia of Business, copyright is “…the exclusive right given to the author of a work—including words, music, video, sound, picture, architecture, etc. –to reproduce, distribute, display, license or perform the work”. Basically, copyright prohibits use of another’s creative expression without permission of the author. Of course, there are many aspects of the law that apply specifically to a college setting, including use of reserves, photocopying, and classroom use of others works.

The NSCC Library has posted a LibGuide to copyright in an attempt to provide in one space a guide to many of the questions that arise within our community. Take a look and let us know if this answers your needs.

February is a time to explore the history of our country. During this month each year we focus on how African-Americans have shaped the development of our nation and culture. The NSCC Library has an excellent collection of resources about African-Americans. In the Library we have our “Roots of Black History” displays containing an incredible series documenting the early struggles for freedom and equality. This history and literature series covers topics from war, literature, music, movements, revolts, living conditions, attitudes, and more. Come by the Lynn and Danvers Campus Libraries and take a look.

Our U.S. History in Context database is another great resource for African-American history. Read about the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13^th Amendment. Learn about the court cases that limited and freed African-Americans, from Dred Scott vs. Sanford, Plessy vs. Ferguson, Brown vs. the Board of Education, and more. Read about the legislative milestones such as, the Civil Rights Act, Fair Housing Act, Voting Rights Act, or Executive Order 9981. Watch news footage from the 1963 Civil Rights March on Washington, or Malcolm X’s “by any means necessary” speech. U.S. History in Context contains images, audio clips, news sources, primary documents and more. Check it out!

eBook Readers, Tablet Computers and Smartphones were popular holiday gifts - We have free eBooks!

A recent Los Angeles Times news article reported that bookseller Barnes & Noble now sells more digital books than physical ones through it online bookstore. Libraries are certainly aware of this increasingly popular format for books, and North Shore Community College Library has purchased an online ebook collection of popular fiction and nonfiction titles called Overdrive to service this trend. The collection can be searched through or browsed, has the option to be placed on a waiting list for checked out titles, and best of all is free. Access only requires your NSCC library card number and the free Overdrive Media Console software or app. Start using your holiday gifts more today!

Sustainability at NSCC

Sustainability at NSCC

Sustainability is becoming one of the most important concepts in our current lives. Because of this, NSCC has developed a number of programs to help in both learning about the concept and putting it into practice. The libraries have collected many materials on this topic, and have created a LibGuide, or research aid, to help in researching related subjects. Click Sustainability LibGuide to see it, or reach it via our library homepage, at library.northshore.edu. Under “Find it”, choose LibGuides, then enter “sustainability”.

In addition to the new building in Danvers, an important action taken by NSCC in relation to sustainability is the installation of solar panels on the roof of the McGee Building in Lynn.

In February 2006, the NSCC Facilities department invited the Massachusetts Division of Energy Resources to survey the college as a potential Solar Photovoltaic site. Working with several state agencies NSCC applied and received federal funding for a 62.2kW Solar PV installation. The solar installation was completed in July, 2009. The solar panels are expected to produce 74,726 kWh on average annually, 3% of the buildings electrical requirements and will reduce CO₂ by 50 tons annually.

Need a 'Works Cited' page? Get help here!

The semester is coming to an end, and most of the questions we’re getting are about citing. Creating a “Works Cited” page can be a daunting task. Interpreting the style guide is often confusing.

We have several tools that can help you with this. Noodlebib is our most powerful citation resource, covering the most types of sources. You’ll find Noodlebib under the “Quick Links” on our website. You’ll create your own account to use while you’re enrolled at NSCC. Noodlebib will format various types of sources, including: email, interviews, blogs, and memos.

Easybib is a free Web citation tool that is incredibly easy-to-use. The site allows you to create your own account and store your citations, and offers a great autocite option. Copy and paste a URL, or ISBN and Easybib will create the citation for you. The simple interface provides quick and easy citations.

MS Word 2007 has a citation tool built-in. Using the “References” ribbon, you can insert citation directly in the text (parenthetical citations) and create a “Works Cited” page at the same time.

The MLA and APA handbooks are available at the Reference Desk in the Library. These traditional sources are the definitive style guides.

Impress Your Professor: Create dazzling bibliographies this holiday season, here’s how

1.) Request a personal shopper: make an appointment to consult with a research librarian about your topic

2.) Try something different: use the Library’s research databases to find authoritative sources along with search engines

3.) Bargain hunt: throw in an encyclopedia entry or other reference source to show you have done background research on your topic (the best place to start your research)

4.) Be well versed: include sources that add new information about your topic and multiple, objective viewpoints

5.) Be wise: select articles that are scholarly and academic, not popular and trendy

6.) Brand name quality: be sure to research the author’s credentials (what is their educational and professional background? what other publications have they written in the field?)

7.) Buy an assortment: use a variety of sources in your bibliography – books, articles and web documents

8.) Naughty or nice: understand the author’s/publisher’s intent/purpose (is it to inform, educate, persuade, push an agenda, sell/market, entertain?)

9.) Check your dates, twice: does currency matter with your topic? (typically in rapidly changing fields like the sciences, health and technology results prior to the past 5 years should be discarded)

10.) Can’t find the right size?: Can’t find what you need? Use the Library’s Interlibrary Loan service to find specific articles and books that may be more relevant to your topic

11.) Look svelte: use NoodleBib, the Library’s online citation generator, to create polished and perfectly formatted bibliographies that can be imported into Word

12.) Be charitable: create an annotated (descriptive and evaluative summaries of your sources) bibliography

NSCC Library Participates in Forum on Tolerance

The NSCC Library will have a display at the 26th Forum on Tolerance on November 4th in the Lynn Gym. The Forum, titled "Tolerance in a Time of Intolerance", will look at the life of Chiune Sugihara, "a Japanese diplomat who served as the Consul in Lithuania at the beginning of World War II. Sugihara, who despite being forbidden to do so by the Japanese government, signed exit exit visas for Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany's persecution. By following his conscience and disobeying his government, Sugihara saved the lives of 6,000 Jews." (NSCC News, Oct 8, 2010) Books, DVDs, and Library resources about Sugihara, and the Holocaust will be showcased.

Check out our Libguides! Libguides are online guides to resources and instruction that bring together useful links and descriptions to help students with research and information literacy. We’ve put together Libguides for specific classes, and topics. They are organized with tabs, each covering a different resource, topic, or stage of research.

Each tab contains links and instruction for students to successfully use the Library’s resources, or navigate a research assignment. Libguides are designed with a particular course, or assignment in mind by Librarians and Faculty to bring together the resources needed to complete an assignment. They save time and frustration allowing for a one-stop portal to quality resources.

NSCC Library Expanding Collection of Graphic Novels

The NSCC Library has a growing collection of graphic novels. Most are located in the PH 6737 area of the collection. We have graphic interpretations of many classics, such as: Shakespeare's Hamlet, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, and Romeo and Juliet, Fahrenheit 451, many of Mark Twain's works, and more.
We're building a collection to help support the NSCC course "The Culture of Comic Books", and for your reading pleasure. Come in and check them out!

NSCC Libraries to Participate in Fall Fest

The Library's theme for the 2010 Fall Fest showcase is The Progressive Library. This year the Library is encouraging students to insure their college success by stopping by their tables at Fall Fest.

The Library will be demonstrating its new web page and popular databases. Students may also "like" the North Shore Community College Library on Facebook and be entered into a drawing to win a $25.00 gift card to the NSCC Bookstore. As part of a drive to promote National Library Card Sign-Up Month, students can activate their NSCC ID into their library card right at the Library's tables rather than having to wait in long lines to have their ID registered in the Libraries at the beginning of the semester.

Fall Fest will take place at the Danvers Campus on Friday, September 17th in the Danvers Campus Cafeteria from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fall Fest at the Lynn Campus is Wednesday, September 22nd in the Lynn Campus Gymnasium and runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m..

Information Research Course Revised Due to Student Feedback

Students who had taken the College's Research Methods Course (LSC 101) said the length of the five week course wasn't long enough for the amount of work involved. The Librarians who instruct the course listened and the course has now been redesigned and extended to 10 weeks, allowing for more time between class periods for assignments and readings to be completed.

Research Methods is a one-credit course that fulfills one open elective. The course teaches the steps of the research process, and by having students select a research topic of their choosing or one that is an actual assignment for a class, students create their own research process model. The course also places a strong emphasis on learning how to effectively use online technologies like databases, search engines and subject directories for retrieving information. LSC 101 is offered twice a semester at both campuses, and meets one day a week for the 10 weeks.

If you tend to wait until the last minute to do your research, more often than not struggle with research assignments, or feel like you are missing out on important information because you only search using Google, then LSC 101 may be a good course choice for you. Students said the class gave them a strategy to do research by establishing a research plan, and gave great tips to stay organized through the entire process. By learning advanced searching techniques students were able to achieve results that were more refined and on topic. Also students commented that the forms and worksheets used in the class allowed them to achieve the best outcomes for their research, leaving them less stressed out when it comes to selecting appropriate information for a research project. Who wouldn't like to have less stress in their life!?
